How do you want to retire?
I’m already working on retirement, planning on early – in 13 years I’ll be 62. I’ve got house plans for a 1900s build in the woods. Small 1 bedroom, dining room living room combination, 1 bathroom and a kitchen. Small garden spot, somewhere near a fishing spot.
It’s not going to be fancy or extravagant, but it’ll be exactly what I want – quiet, simple, and completely mine. No neighbors close enough to worry about, no schedules to keep except my own. Just us, my books, my coffee, and all the creative space I’ll need without anyone else’s energy interfering.
My plans are to give everything to the kids before passing, so the only thing they’ll have to worry about is just my land and house. I want to make things as simple as possible for them, the same way I want to make life as simple as possible for me.
The 1900s style appeals to me – there’s something honest about that era’s architecture, straightforward and functional without being flashy. Perfect for someone who finds beauty in routine and solitude. A small garden to tend, water nearby for fishing when I want to, and enough space to be as weird as I want without bothering anyone.
Plans aren’t set in stone, but they’re already in the making. Thirteen years feels like the right timeline – long enough to get everything together, but not so long that I’m waiting forever to actually live the way I want to.
