When the Sponge Gets Full

How do you know when it’s time to unplug? What do you do to make it happen?

Recognizing when it’s time to unplug starts with understanding that I’m a sponge who absorbs nearly everything, so physical and emotional exhaustion hits differently, when tiredness sets in and brings that heavy, sad feeling that resembles depression but isn’t quite the same thing. It’s more of a feeling of being overwhelmed, a signal that I’ve reached my limit with engagement and social interaction. The clearest sign is becoming increasingly quiet, not because my brain stops working, but because I’ve reached that point of asking myself “do I have to deal with this, right now?” It’s less about dramatic symptoms and more about a gradual withdrawal from the energy it takes to stay constantly connected and responsive to the digital world around me. Not just digital but physical as well.
When that moment hits, the approach is complete and immediate… I’m out, I leave the party quietly… cold turkey, shutting everything down at once, disappearing from spaces for however long it takes to feel genuinely excited about plugging back in again. During this time, the focus shifts to consuming content like TV series, sitcoms or writing and other hobby work … But only when thoughts flow clearly, while still checking devices occasionally but only to read without responding or posting. There are no elaborate strategies or structured plans … it’s simply a lack of interest caused from being overwhelmed that naturally creates these boundaries. The challenge is that this pattern of being fully engaged one day and completely disengaged the next has cost me some friendships, as people struggle to understand my need for these sudden, extended breaks from my digital and physical social life. The return happens organically when excitement about reconnecting finally resurfaces, signaling it’s time to start again.

  1. A true friend will appreciate your need for a break at certain times. We can’t always be happy & smiley- it’s exhausting…

  2. I am very much like this, although I retreat to nature and quiet, my art or my harp but alone w music or silence.. staying long in any type of over stimulating (computers or people) and places is always a guarantee I slip out at some point. Family knows it and so do my friends..it’s a part of me I have learned to live and respect and a part of me I have spent time informing others about , so not to leave anyone with emotions or feelings that aren’t theirs to digest, it’s a knowing and a respect I learned over time , the best ones stay and the others are released freely….. always be YOU !

    1. 🙂 Nature is also one of my escapes, I didn’t wanna go into a long list of all my secret things. A harp though… That would be such an awesome hobby!!

      1. 😂ya I suppose we all have a laundry list of escape places we’ve found over our lives… I love running away in nature , swimming forever in the lakes and hiding as if I can’t be found, no phone , no nothing, it would drive people crazy I’d do that but it became a necessity to shake life’s stimulation , and finally accepted by anyone around me.. I’m an escape artist , but it wasn’t accepted or funny and I was ridiculed for years until I learned it’s who I am and what works for me.. now people tell me to go get lost in the woods or jump in the lake or river 😂😂😂I need it!! 😂😂
My harp is definitely 💯 an amazing place to ride over sensitivity and harmonize everything!!!! Do u play an instrument?

      2. I play the bongo … Lol, just kidding. I do play some guitar & keyboard as in modern day production type stuff, it’s pretty simple to work with loops. I’ve not done it in a while, I’ve been more focused on writing in the past year or two than creative music stuff. You’re my kind of person, woods… lakes & being lost in the scenery is my kind of stuff too. It’s refreshing and eye candy for the mind!

      3. Nothing better than daily doses of nature by water. We are fortunate enough to live on a small spring lake on a small island .. surrounding by water in many forms… it inspires so much….Keep writing and provoking creative thought, I’ll keep reading.
