Backwoods Shit: A Song From Somewhere Down in the Hollow

Backwoods Shit: A Song From Somewhere Down in the Hollow

Some roads ain’t on no map.

Some songs probably shouldn’t be on the radio.

“Backwoods Shit” is the latest transmission from the fictional world of Buzzard Dust: Aluminum, supposedly recorded somewhere deep in the hills around Lost Creek, Alabama (Near Crooked Oak, Alabama), by a man named Everett Smiles.

The whole thing is built around that old backwoods mythology — crooked roads, moonshine jars, beat-up trucks, creek water, and the kind of stories that get told differently every time somebody tells them.

I wanted this one to feel less like a modern recording and more like some strange old record you might find buried in a box at an estate sale.

A forgotten song.

A forgotten singer.

And a 78 RPM record that probably shouldn’t have survived in the first place.

This is Buzzard Dust: Aluminum doing what Buzzard Dust does best: taking a ridiculous idea, giving it a little history, and pretending it was always there.

Some things feed a family.

Some just stain the wood.

Turn it up and head down the dirt road. 📻🌲

  1. Hi Emmitt. I sincerely appreciate your blog. Just wanted to let you know why I recently took you out of the notification loop. My email inbox fills up with nearly 1,000 notices every day, so I have to limit it to notifications from those who visit regularly. Good to see you back again, and thank you for being understanding!

  2. There is both a Lost Creek and a Crooked Oak in north Alabama, but they ain’t nowhere near each other.

The song reminded me of a story my daddy told me about a relative of his – don’t remember which one – who during WWII transported a fair amount of backwoods shit with a military uniform hanging so as to be visible. Daddy swore the man never got pulled over while doing that.

    1. Lost Creek is actually an area within the Crooked Oak community (off Lost Creek Rd). It doesn’t show up on any map or Google search under “Lost Creek” — just as part of Crooked Oak, near Cedar Creek Reservoir … And you’re right, there is a Lost Creek, Alabama that does show up on the map.

I live in Russellville right now, but I’m about to relocate to Sunny Home, near Brilliant.

Also — your daddy’s relative was a smart man, sporting his credentials while running some shine!

      1. I’m almost your neighbor in Limestone County. And my family had lots of tales to tell. Bet yours does too.
