In an era where independent musicians often chase viral trends, one project is taking a slower, more unconventional path—one rooted in regional identity, storytelling, and the culture of small-town America.
Buzzard Dust Mixtapes is an independent music project focused on Southern, Appalachian, bluegrass, folk, country, and Americana-inspired music. Rather than operating as a traditional artist page, the concept is to build a network of geographically themed mixtapes, beginning in Russellville, Alabama, before expanding town by town and state by state across Appalachia and eventually the United States.
The first chapter has already grown quickly. Within its first week, the Russellville edition amassed approximately 180 tracks, attracted over 1,100 Instagram followers, and began generating 40–100 daily plays, providing an encouraging early response for a brand-new project.
The long-term vision is unusual.
Instead of creating a single online destination, Buzzard Dust Mixtapes aims to establish a series of regional editions. Future locations may include communities throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, and beyond, each reflecting its own musical heritage while remaining connected under the Buzzard Dust name.
“It’s less about promoting one artist and more about creating a living map of Southern music culture,” Owens said. “Each town tells part of the story.”
The project embraces a DIY philosophy. The music, artwork, branding, social media, and expansion strategy are all being developed independently, without a management company or production team.
While many modern mixtapes are associated with hip-hop culture, Buzzard Dust Mixtapes reimagines the concept through an Appalachian lens, blending old-time traditions with the independent spirit that mixtapes have always represented.
As additional regional editions are introduced, the project hopes to connect listeners with the character and culture of small-town America—one mixtape at a time.
Whether Buzzard Dust Mixtapes remains a niche Appalachian experiment or evolves into a nationwide network, one thing is already clear: it’s a project built with patience, consistency, and an ambitious vision that stretches far beyond a single town.
